X Corp. demands 'permanent takedown' of Nitter

Most Nitter1 instances2 reportedly received cease and desist letters from X Corp.3 yesterday, demanding a permanent takedown of all instances and associated code repositories:

Awaiting legal advice at the moment, but for now expect all nitter instances to remain down for the foreseeable future. (nitter.net)4

This service is down for the foreseeable future. There is currently no estimated date for its return. (nitter.tiekoetter.com)5

On Monday 24th August at 8PM EST, we received at letter from X Corp. asking to cease and desist the service XCancel. The service XCancel is stopped until further notice. We are seeking legal advice and won’t share more details for now. (xcancel.com)6

Only a few7 Nitter instances are still operational at the time of this report.

It is worth mentioning that Farside - the redirecting service that also included Nitter instances - decided to shut down earlier this month8.
