tevador proposes 'Share or Perish' selfish mining mitigation
RandomX1 author tevador2 has published a new soft-forking proposal to mitigate selfish mining3 - Share or Perish (SoP)4 - that could potentially be much more resilient to long reorgs:
For deeper reorgs of 10+ blocks, the attacker would need to mine on average 80 work objects faster than the honest chain. [..] the attacker would have a 50% chance of success after 5-6 years of selfish mining. With Nakamoto consensus, the attacker can expect to achieve several 10-block reorgs per day.
SoP doesn’t affect rewards or other consensus rules and is partly based on tevador’s previous Publish or Perish (PoP)5 proposal combined with the idea of workshares6.
Consult the previous Monero Observer report7 to learn more about the ongoing attack against Monero.
This is an ongoing story and the report will be updated when new information is available.
Update: actual average time between 10+ block reorgs is not 5-6 years, but only about 65 days according to preliminary Monte Carlo simulations8.
