plowsof submits CCS proposal to get Bulletproofs++ paper peer-reviewed

plowsof¹ has submitted a CCS proposal² looking to get the ePrint version³ of the Bulletproofs++⁴ paper⁵ peer-reviewed:

This CCS will provide funding for the first step towards Bulletproofs++ implementation in Monero. [..] The deliverable is a write-up which will include recommendations, notes, weaknesses, and issues (if any) of the BP++ paper.

Total funding: 130 XMR.

• Q4 2022: C++ PoC for comparing performance between Bp+ and Bp++ (by CypherStack⁶)
• Q1 2023: PoC implementation for Monero (by UkoeHB⁷)
• Q2-Q4 2023: Paper review and implementation audit (by Quarkslab⁸)
• TBD: one or two more implementation audits (possibly by CypherStack⁵)

Bulletproofs++, if implemented in Monero, could further reduce typical transaction size and significantly improve verification performance⁹.

Update 22/11/16: proposal edited after today’s MRL meeting¹⁰: timeline removed; title changed from audit to peer review to reduce confusion; Cypherstack will start the audit early December; a separate CCS proposal will be submitted for the PoC code audit.

Update 23/3/31: fully funded¹²; review is on hold (author is planning to release a new version of the paper on April 19th)¹³.

Update 23/10/9: plowsof submitted a MR to update proposal for new expanded version of the paper¹⁴: ‘CypherStack has given a new quote for this paper of $32,000. Core will decide how the shortfall is handled.’¹⁵.

Update 23/11/13: the price difference for the new quote (16k$) can be covered by the GF, according to binaryFate¹⁶.

Update 23/12/31: plowsof’s !413 was merged by luigi1111¹⁷; updated funding goal.

Update 24/1/15: ‘the new scope / funds have been secured and CypherStacks review is now underway’ - plowsof¹⁸.
